Minerals are a key element in Geosciences education. Today’s society is in a moment of transition in which the idea of achieving a more sustainable future appears prominently among the top priorities of institutions and governments around the world. Educational and awareness-raising efforts mark the way forward and continue growing to fully achieve this goal. Thanks to the geological heritage of each territory, UNESCO Global Geoparks are working towards a quality sustainable education, adapted and accessible for everyone. Focused on geotourism and territorial development, they have become true educational engines that allow the wheel to continue spinning, thus supporting the sustainable development goals of the UNESCO 2030 Agenda and reaching positive results within the current framework of sustainability. Minerals are a fundamental aspect to understand the message that the landscape hides. Studying them we can recognize past events on a planetary scale, chemical and physical conditions and even appreciate the social functioning of certain times marked by their exploitation and their characteristic uses. Places like the Costanaza Mine in the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara UNESCO Global Geopark in Logrosán are considered educational sanctuaries focused on minerals and their industry to learn about their existence, their properties and their social implications.
