In Professor Ellenberger’s words, the International Geological Congresses have, for the past 100 years, “provided the geological community with an opportunity to create an organizational framework for meeting at regular intervals in a spirit of fraternal cooperation which transcends oceans, languages and wars”. His article* retraces not only the history of the first International Geological Congress but offers some candid and critical reflections on its scientific accomplishments.
